Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Instructions to Assessors

Required Skills and Knowledge

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance on at least two occasions, including:

performing maintenance on at least three pieces of plant or equipment

checking, identifying and reporting defects on rigging equipment

cleaning and preserving equipment on completing work activities using hazardous chemicals where required

applying numerical skills to calculate measurements, mass, load dimensions and safe working loads.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation required for carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance

conform to safe working practices and organisational requirements

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance, including:

keeping work area clean

selecting and wearing required protective clothing and equipment

conducting pre-operational checks

conducting periodic maintenance on chain blocks, come-alongs and crane hoists

examining hooks, shackles, slings, straps and baskets

assembling rust scaling equipment

assembling surface preparation equipment

confirming safety pins are in air hose fittings

applying rust treatment undercoat and final coat

reporting immediately any malfunction or equipment failure

work with others to carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance tasks that meet required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions
